How Tear Trough Filler Works
The tear trough is a groove that forms where the lower eyelid meets the cheek. It deepens as the sub-orbicularis oculi fat (SOOF) and malar fat pads diminish with age — a process that can begin as early as the mid-twenties ↗. The resulting hollow creates a dark shadow that even good concealer cannot fully correct, because the underlying cause is structural — volume loss, not pigmentation.
Dermal filler placed in the tear trough adds back lost volume beneath the skin. For HA filler, the product is injected into the deep tissue plane — ideally in the preperiosteal or sub-orbicularis plane — where it integrates with surrounding tissue and provides support without visible surface changes ↗. The shadow lightens because the structural deficit has been addressed at its source.
PRF works differently: a small blood draw is centrifuged to concentrate platelets and growth factors, which are then injected to stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration over 4–8 weeks ↗.

Proper technique places Volbella in the preperiosteal or sub-orbicularis plane — well below the skin surface. Safety & the Tyndall Effect

What is the Tyndall effect? The Tyndall effect is a blue or grey discoloration that appears when HA filler is placed too close to the skin surface. The thin, translucent undereye skin allows light to scatter off the filler gel, producing the visible color change. It is not dangerous, but it is cosmetically undesirable. ↗
How we minimize the risk:

What if something needs correction? Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is fully reversible. Hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid, can be injected to rapidly break down the filler if there is a Tyndall effect, asymmetry, or any other outcome that warrants correction. This is one of the key reasons many clinicians — and patients — prefer HA filler over non-reversible alternatives for the undereye zone.

What to Expect
Step 1 — Free Consultation
We assess your tear trough anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine whether HA filler, PRF, or a combination is appropriate. We review your medical history including any blood thinners, dental procedures, or prior filler treatments. No commitment required.
Step 2 — Day of Treatment
Topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes. Volbella XC also contains lidocaine for additional comfort during injection. The cannula entry point is marked, and filler is placed with precise, slow delivery — the full treatment takes approximately 20–30 minutes.
Step 3 — Immediate Post-Treatment
Mild swelling and occasional light bruising at the cannula entry point are normal and typically resolve within 3–5 days. We provide cold compresses and aftercare instructions before you leave. You can return to most normal activities the same day.
Step 4 — Results & Follow-Up
The result is visible immediately, though final results are best assessed after 2 weeks once all swelling has resolved. A touch-up consultation at 2 weeks is available. Full follow-up at 6–12 months to assess longevity and discuss retreatment.
Aftercare
First 48 Hours
