What Causes Skin Texture?
Skin texture refers to the surface quality and structural uniformity of the skin. Smooth skin depends on an intact, organized collagen and elastin scaffold in the dermis. When that scaffold is disrupted — by age, sun damage, acne, or inflammation — the surface reflects it.
The most common structural causes of textured skin include:
Collagen fragmentation and loss. Starting in the mid-twenties, collagen synthesis slows and existing collagen fibers become disorganized. This is the primary driver of gradual texture change with age, producing a rough, uneven surface quality and loss of pore tightness.
Post-inflammatory fibrosis from acne. When acne lesions heal, the dermis often lays down irregular collagen in and around the pore structure. This produces the shallow depressions, surface roughness, and uneven relief characteristic of post-acne textured skin.
Sebaceous gland enlargement and pore dilation. Pore size is largely determined by the structural integrity of the surrounding collagen walls. As collagen weakens, pores lose their scaffolding and appear larger. Chronic sebum overproduction accelerates this process.
Photodamage. Ultraviolet exposure degrades both collagen and elastin, producing a thickened, rough surface texture and irregular pigmentation that worsens skin appearance.

Safety & Skin Tones
Melanin-rich skin tones require particular care when selecting an energy-based device for texture treatment. This is not a contraindication to RF microneedling — it is a reason to choose the right device and the right protocol.
Why RF Microneedling Is Safe for Darker Skin Tones
Surface-based laser and light treatments (ablative lasers, IPL) target chromophores in the epidermis — including melanin. In patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III–VI, this creates a meaningful risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), hypopigmentation, or burn injury if the device or settings are not appropriate.
RF microneedling works differently. The Candela Matrix RF System delivers energy subdermally, through insulated needles, with minimal interaction at the epidermal level. Because melanin is concentrated in the epidermis and the RF energy is deposited in the dermis, the risk of melanin-related adverse events is substantially lower than with surface-based light treatments.

Preparing for Your Appointment
In the days before treatment, you will be asked to discontinue retinoids, exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs), and vitamin C serums, and to avoid prolonged sun exposure. Arrive at your appointment with clean, product-free skin. A topical numbing cream is applied approximately 45–60 minutes before treatment begins to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
During Treatment
The Candela Matrix RF System handpiece is passed methodically across the treatment area according to your customized protocol. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm pressure with occasional brief stinging as the needles engage. Treatment time for a full face is typically 30–45 minutes. Our RN clinicians monitor your comfort and response throughout; settings can be adjusted in real time. A cooling device is applied immediately after treatment to soothe the skin.
Immediately After
Redness and mild swelling are expected for 24–48 hours — similar in appearance to a moderate sunburn. Small pinpoint marks at needle entry sites may be visible for 1–3 days. Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. Makeup can typically be reapplied after 24 hours. You will receive written aftercare instructions and a follow-up check-in from your clinician.
Results Timeline
Visible improvement in skin texture, pore appearance, and overall skin quality begins to emerge at 4–6 weeks as new collagen is synthesized. Results continue developing over 3–6 months following each session as collagen remodeling progresses.
